Department of Zoology
The Department of Zoology of our College was established in the year 1973 with B.Sc., Zoology Degree Course affiliated to the Madurai Kamaraj University, Madurai. With a smooth transition, the Department has now grown to the level of offering B.Sc., M.Sc., It also offers a Certificate Course in Sericulture (UGC sponsored). It has several excellent teaching-learning facilities including exceptionally well-equipped spacious laboratories with well equipped instruments, three lecture halls (two with LCD projection facility), a microbiology lab, a museum with well diversified collections including fossils and microliths, an insectary, molluscan shell collection, a well-resourced Department Library, and a Botanical Garden (herbal).
Our Department stands a pioneer in organizing UGC sponsored National Level Seminars. It has taken the lead in conducting various types of awareness on water conservation, herbal medicine, value added fishery products for the local people. It engages in recording the temperature and humidity on campus and documents the flora and fauna of the College premises periodically. It maintains a model herbal garden including a model mulberry garden and a fish culture unit for rearing ornamental fishes. Hands-on training on Vermi-composting technology is given to our students regularly since 2010. Every year BIOFES (Biology Youth Festival) is conducted for our students. BIONEWS, a magazine is published by the students and for the students.
Our Department has been bestowed with many dedicated and committed teachers as its faculty from the beginning. Our former faculty brought name and fame to our College through their significant contribution towards the growth, and development of the College under the eminent leadership of Prof M.P.Lambert Isaac, founder, and Pioneer Professor. Department of Botany is a sister Department offering allied subjects to our students. Presently, it has a strength of 4+1 teaching staff (regular stream) + 2 teaching staff (self-financing stream) + 2 non-teaching staff with a permitted student strength of 46 per batch in UG.
Our students have bagged several University ranks when we were under the affiliated system of Madurai Kamaraj University, Madurai, and Manonmamiam University, Tirunelveli. The alumni of this Department have brought laurels to the Institution by way of their academic achievements and positions held both within our country and abroad. They are serving the country in various capacities.
