Department of Economics
The Department of Economics is one of the oldest Departments in the College. The Department of Economics came into existence in 1962 with the Pre University course. Degree course was introduced in 1966 and Master Degree in 1987. The Department has been elevated to the status of Research Centre in 2011 and is recognized by the Manonmaniam Sundaranar University to enroll students as full time and part time research scholars.M.Phil Degree was introduced in 2013. The Department of Economics has distinguished itself as one of the leading centres of learning economics in the southern part of Tamil Nadu. Several major and minor research projects sponsored by UGC and ICSSR have been undertaken by our faculty members. The Department periodically organizes workshops and seminars on Research Methodology, Energy Economics, Health Economics, and Current Issues in Indian Economy
The Department has the distinction of having developed a unique and challenging curriculum and syllabus at the Undergraduate and Postgraduate levels. Students are trained to analyze concrete problems with the help of conceptual frames, theoretical insights, and mathematical, statistical, and econometric tools along with computer applications. Areas of specialization include Development Economics, Environmental Economics, Econometrics, Mathematical Economics, Money and Finance, Institutional Economics, Micro and Macro studies.
As a postgraduate and research department with enviable legacy of illustrious teachers and alumni for more than half a century, it has carved a niche for itself as a centre of learning in which Economics is taught with a difference. It has the distinction of having initiated an active discussion on the new approach to Economics curriculum and the subject of ‘Teaching Economics’ in an ongoing exercise among the faculty of Economics. It is a matter of great satisfaction that students and faculty act in unison to make teaching-learning process a highly purposeful mission.
