Department of English
The Department of English was established in the very beginning of the College as the Founder Principal of the College, Prof. George Muller, was its first head. The abundance of English Literature books in the General Library has been the telling testimony to the importance given to English since its inception. Stalwarts such as Prof. Jeyam Navaraj, Dr. T.J.T. Rajkumar, Dr. T. Joseph Christadass, and Dr. S. Pauline Anbselvi were the former heads of the English Department. Bro. Emil Jebasingh, Founder of FMPB and Vishwavani Missionary organizations, was one of the proud pioneer faculty of the Department.
English Department is instrumental in developing the career of rural students from the weaker sections of the society who solely depend on the college to enhance their English Language skills. Thus the Department stands tall towards the fulfillment of the vision of the College which is serving the upliftment of the poor rural community in and around Sawyerpuram.
Initially, the English Department was teaching only the compulsory Language Paper for Intermediate and Degree courses. There were three faculty under the government aided scheme. Realizing the growing need for English Literature, in 2010, a Course in English Literature for Undergraduate students was started in the self–finance mode. Having gained an overwhelming response, the Department was upgraded to the Postgraduation level in the year 2013, and in the year 2015 M. Phil course was also introduced. There are three Ph.D. holders among the faculty and three more on the verge of completing their Ph. D. Eleven faculty members in the Department are now in the self-financed scheme.
PENLITA (Pope’s English Literary Association) has been functioning since 2014 to bring out the talents of the Literature students. English Club has also been established to conduct various competitions and activities for all the students in the College. BENS (Basic English for New Students), Certificate course for Communicate English and Spoken English, Special Spoken English Programme for First year students are the additional activities undertaken in the Department apart from regular academic activities.
The Department has produced six university rank holders so far. The first undergraduate batch of students have become the faculty members of the Department. Four of our former students have cleared UGC – NET.
